An inspiring festival generated by the European Cantors Association Celebrating the Music of Jewish Prayer in 15 synagogue services, January to April 2024
Between January and April 2024, fifteen synagogue services and five concerts presented a feast of the very best and most interesting liturgical music, to London congregations, audiences and guests. There were no special requirements other than participants in this festival should reflect the music that their community most loves and responds to best.
Some synagogues invited a guest chazan if they did not have a regular one. Many made sure their occasional choirs were in attendance. Other services were led as usual by the rabbi and lay leaders. The European Cantors Association was keen to see and celebrate whatever works in each situation.
•Though it was a national festival, this time only synagogues in and around London participated. All the synagogues made sure their community was well informed and encouraged to attend. Information about the services, with special focus on the music, was circulated in advance to members in all the synagogue weekly newsletters and on their websites. One synagogue went so far as to invite the community to request what pieces the cantor and choir should sing. The United Synagogue website included all United Synagogue constituents that were participating (which was the majority).
• All the synagogues noted increased attendance for the shabbat of their musical service – one as much as 100% increase.
• ECA hopes to publish the favourite pieces as nominated by the participating synagogues.
