Cantor Beny Maissner ז"ל

1944 - 2025

Distinguished cantor who traversed the denomination boundary and was a strong supporter and friend of the ECA family,

Beny was a larger-than-life presence in our organisation from the moment he first joined us at our Convention in Prague in 2016.

He taught chazanut and nusach masterclasses; starred in our Gala Concerts; researched, composed and delivered original stimulating lecture material – not least about his uncle, Chazan Israel Alter; and always  presented his content and himself with passion and brilliance.

His contributions were never limited to lecturing and performance, however.  He was a mentor, a friend, a guide, and a source of wisdom, especially to the younger generation of cantors whom he nurtured with warmth and generosity.

Beny leaves a musical legacy which is vast and vibrant. As Cantor (lately, Cantor Emeritus) of Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto, he served with distinction for over four decades.  But after retirement he returned to davenning with the Orthodox and was זָכָה לְהוֹקָרָה בְּכָל זְרָמֵי הַיַּהֲדוּת - respected across the spectrum of Jewish worship.

On his death, cantors across Orthodox and Progressive movements paid tribute to him in equal measure.

He was a master of diverse musical styles—from Jewish Renaissance to contemporary Israeli compositions—and performed globally, often alongside symphony orchestras.

His beloved wife Hope was his constant companion at every ECA convention, and together they were a beacon of warmth and hospitality to us all.

Beny often joked that his claim to fame was being the nephew of Chazan Israel Alter, but for us, his true legacy was simply being Beny—a genuine mensch who lifted others through his music, mentorship, and spirit.

His personal collection of cantorial treasures will live on at the Israel National Library archives, ensuring that future generations will come to know and be inspired by his work.

We shall honour his memory at our upcoming Convention in Berlin in November, where his absence will be deeply felt but his presence will be lovingly remembered.

We wish his daughters Shira, Tal, Rivka, and the entire Maissner family long life and no words can fully express the hole which Beny leaves in our ECA community

Cantor Beny Maissner was a true pillar of Jewish life. He excelled in all he did, and always thought of others first.

We collaborated on many projects over the years, and his legacy will continue to shape the future of Jewish music and prayer.

זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה - may his memory always be for a blessing.
